The Employment system in West Bengal

In South Asia, there are millions of job hunters including tribes suffered from lack of even local employment opportunities to migrate towards urban areas. Mostly the tribes travel from West Bengal and Jharkhand for an employment opportunity.

At this juncture, a miracle happened in the year of 2013. The West Bengal Government announced the appointment of the first woman graduate from the TOTO, an endangered community in North Bengal. She was appointed as a social worker in the Backward Classes Welfare Department and she is the first person who came from the community and appointed in Govt Job in West Bengal.


Rita Toto was appointed by the West Bengal Government to make her help to her own community.

The honorable Chief Minister Mamta Banerjee, West Bengalannounced the establishment of a unique department for tribal in North Bengal. She added that the department would take care of the endangered communities such as Labhas, Totos, and Boros.

Madam quoted that there were only 1346 persons in the Toto Community that nears extinction and her government initiated to provide free food grains to the community members. Mr. Partha Chatterjee, Minister of Education registered that the WB Govt Job was given to Rita Toto would encourage the entire community.

The Toto lady completed her graduation in the Humanities discipline from “Prasanna Deb Women’s College” in Jalpaiguri district in the year of 2010. She is the daughter of a Group D employee in a local bank. Totos live in Totopara, a village on the Indo-Bhutan border is a primitive tribe community of India.

The Labor Department and the Information Technology Department, Government of West Bengal launched “Employment Bank Website” on 26.7.2012 with the support from Higher Education Department and Technical Education & Training Department, Govt. of West Bengal.
