Surface Book is Emerging as a Strong Competitor for Macbook

With the 7th generation processor in place, Apple’s 13 inches MacBook Pro is now more powerful than ever. However, the rivals seem to be catching up soon, and Microsoft’s Surface Book is running on the forefront.

Surface Book is a powerful machine that invites artists and designers with its sophisticated touch screen, fantastic stylus and the ability to detach the display to use it as a tablet. It looks like, the Surface Book is certainly going to give Apple’s MacBook Pro a run for its money.

If you want to buy the new MacBook Pro in India you should also know what other options are made available to you. So here we are, pitching these two incredible machines against each other to find out which one is more lucrative.

Design

The hardware design of the MacBook Pro hasn’t changed. It is still a beauty, especially in space grey colour. It is 0.6 inches thick, and at 3 pounds it is one of the lightest notebook in the market. Apple has also reinvented, its logo, and it doesn’t glow anymore.

The Surface Book, on the other hand, is a little thicker at 0.9 inches and weighs 3.3 pounds.  However, the design of this notebook is part of its innovation. It is sleek silver but what’s unique is the fulcrum hinge that lets you detach the display from the keyboard so you can use it as a tablet.

Ports

The MacBook Pro comes with the latest USB Type C and Thunderbolt 3 port which means that you will need dongles for your existing gears since they are still in limited usage across devices. The MacBook Pro with touch bar has four ports, but the base model only has two. Besides, the jack is missing in the latest models.

The Surface Book has avoided the Type C altogether, but it does offer a full suite of other ports which includes 2 USB 3.0 ports, an SD card reader, a mini displayport, a headphone jack and of course the proprietary Surface Connect port for charging and using the Surface Dock which offers even more ports.

Display

Even though Apple’s biggest USP is their display but, Surface Book’s pure size and resolution win on both counts. The MacBook Air comes with a 13.3-inch display while the Surface Book has a 13.5-inch touch screen. However, the Surface Book has a taller screen with 3:2 aspect ratio.

But when it comes to brightness MacBook Pro wins with vivid picture quality. It measures 458 nits and covering 128 percent of sRGB colour gamut. The Surface Book’s configuration is also nothing short of being impressive with 376 nits and 112.6 percent, but they certainly don’t match Apple.

Keyboard

MacBook Pro uses a small travel butterfly mechanism which takes a little time to get used to. It requires 74 grammes force to actuate. It also has a function row and the Touch Bar. The Surface Book's keyboard has 1.5 millimetres of travel.

Special Features

The Function row in Apple’s MacBook has been replaced with the Touch Bar and an OLED touch screen with different features depending on the app you’re using. While Apple’s default apps and others like Spotify, Evernote and Dashlane are compatible with the Touch Bar, there are many that are not, and several features aren’t intuitive because you have to look at a second screen.

Surface Book’s best feature is that the touch screen display can be detached from the keyboard and used as a tablet and once attached back can be used as a laptop. It also works with the Surface Pen and the Surface Dial.

Performance

The MacBook Pro offers Intel Core i5-7267U CPU with 512GB, PCIe SSD, and 8GB RAM enables powerful performance. While tested on Geekbench 4 the notebook earned a score of 9,2,13 on overall performance and copied 4.97GB of data at 727 MBps.

The top model of Surface Book comes with Performance Base’s Core i7-6600 CPU, 16GB of RAM and 1TB of PCIe SSD storage notched a score of 7,559 on the Geekbench 4 test, and it transferred data at 363.6 MBps. Part of this has to do with the 6th generation CPU that Surface Book uses, MacBook, on the other hand, uses 7th generation CPU.

But when it comes to graphics performance, Surface Book has a leg up with 2GB of VRAM. The MacBook uses Intel’s Iris Plus Graphics 650. While tested on Dirt 3, Surface Book ran a game at 117 frames per second whereas the MacBook reached just 41 frames per second, even at low resolution.

Battery Life

On the Laptop Mag Battery Test, while continuously browsing the web over Wi-Fi, the MacBook Pro endured for 8 hours and 40 minutes and the Surface Book lasted for 9 hours and 10 minutes. And if you don’t mind integrated graphics, the Surface Book can last up to 12.5 hours.

So, if you want to buy the latest MacBook Pro in India, make sure to check out Surface Book by Microsoft as well.
