Mercedes Benz A-Class v/s Audi A3 – The War Begins

The last decade and a half has been quite good for the Indian automobile industry as many big names including Audi, Mercedes Benz, Jaguar and BMW have arrived in the country. They have not only made their presence felt but started to flourish in terms of sales as well. Further with the income level of the metro dwelling citizens rising in the country, many more have been able to afford the car than ever before.

Mercedes and Audi have been going head to head for the market leadership and both have done quite well in terms of sales and recognition. With A-Class for the Mercedes Benz and A3 for Audi being one of their top models, let us take a look at how they perform when put head to head against each other.


1.Design

Both Mercedes Benz A-Class and Audi A3 have a beautiful design. Mercedes Benz has a sleeker look with a bold front fascia and an elegant rear portion. Dimensionally the sedan comes with a length of 4299mm, a width of 2022mm and a height of 1433mm.

Audi A3 on the other hand comes with a length of 4456mm, a width of 1960mm and a height of 1416mm. Both the cars have a definite powerful presence on the road that would turn head. Either way, you cannot go wrong with both the cars really being stand outs.

2.Engine
 
Both the coupes have diesel and petrol variants. When we compare the diesel variants, Mercedes Benz A-Class comes with an In-line diesel 16V engine that has a 2.2 litre capacity with a displacement of 2143cc. The engine uses 4 cylinders of 4 valves each. The engine gives away 136bhp at 3600 to 4400rpm along with twisting away a torque of 1400 to 3000rpm. The engine works in sync with a 7 speed automatic transmission system.

The diesel variant of Audi A3 comes with a 2-litre 16V TDI diesel engine that is backed by a 1968cc with four cylinder of four valves each. The diesel motor gives away 143bhp power at 3500 to 4000rom along with 320NM torque at 1750 to 3000rpm. The engine is mated to a 6 speed automatic transmission system.

When we look at the petrol variant, Mercedes Benz A-Class comes with 1.6 litre 16V In-Line petrol engine that has a displacement of 1595cc with a four cylinders having four valves each. Here the numbers come down a bit with 122bhp power at 5000rpm along with 200Nm torque at 1250 to 4000rpm. Audi A3 however uses the TFSI Petrol motor that has a 1.8 litre capacity that uses the massive 1798cc displacement giving away 177.5bhp power in return at 5100 to 6200rpm along with 250Nm torque at 1250 to 5000rpm. Here in both the cases the engines are mated to a 7 speed automatic transmission system.

3.Performance

When it comes to Mercedes Benz or Audi, the price tag is going to be a hefty one which means that customers would really have to burn a hole in their pocket to attain one. However when it comes to used Mercedes India has a big market which can reduce the stress on your pocket. This would certainly be worth it considering that cars like Audi A3 and Mercedes Benz A-Class do not fall behind in terms of performance.

Mercedes Benz A-Class can go from 0 to 100kmph in a span of 8.6 seconds and attain a top speed of 202kmph. On the other hand the Audi A3 can cross the 100kmph barrier in just 7.3 seconds. The top speed of Audi A3 also exceeds the offering of Mercedes Benz A-Class hitting 250kmph as its ultimate mark.
