The Underdog of MBA Exams - Common Management Admission Test (CMAT)

Common Management Admission Test (CMAT) is a national-level, computerized and management entrance test which is true to itself and is a test of accuracy and speed. This test is conducted by the All India Council for Technical Education - AICTE. CMAT is usually held in the month of January every year and the standard schedule is announced  CMAT was previously held twice a year i.e. in September and February but is now held once a year. CMAT scores are adopted by numerous B-schools and management colleges over India for the admissions into MBA, PGDM and PGP courses.

All the candidates applying for CMAT must qualify the following criteria:

·          They should possess a Graduation Degree in any discipline.
·          Final year students appearing for their Graduation Degree i.e 10+2+3 are also acceptable for CMAT, provided that the results are declared before the commencement CMAT admissions.
·          The candidate must attain Indian Citizenship
·          There’s no particular age limitation for the candidates to fulfil


Candidates need to visit the official website to apply for CMAT. Complete the registration process, fill up the application form and make the payment for the application form - a 3 step process. Allotment of the exam dates and centers are made on a first come first served basis and also in some cases it is subject to availability.

For candidates of all the categories, the examination fee is always specified in the official notification / information brochure available at the official website. Candidates can make the payment online via Net Banking / Credit or Debit Card or through Cash via a State Bank of India challan.


All the information pertaining to the candidate's CMAT admit card is uploaded on the official website. One can download and / or print the same and keep it safe till the admissions process is not completed. Candidates may also carefully go through the additional details provided regarding their admit cards.


CMAT is a computer based (online) 3-hour examination. It contains a set of hundred questions divided into four sections pertaining to Quantitative Techniques and Data Interpretation, Logical Reasoning, Language Comprehension, and General Awareness. (4) Marks are awarded for each correct answer and (1) Mark is deducted for each wrong answer.


The result of CMAT is declared a month (i.e. in February) after the examination is conducted (i.e. in January). Candidates can download and print their Score Cards from the official website.


The selection process involves the assessment of the Scores obtained by the candidates, a Group Discussion and a Personal Interview / a separate Written Test. A final list is prepared and released online based on the combined scores obtained.
