Getting to Know Flex Cables

When two or more wires are twisted, warped, and braided together to form a single assembly, and the ends of which connect to two electrical devices to transfer the electrical signals from one device to the other, they form an electrical cable. There are numerous types of electrical cables available suited to the need of the user.

Coaxial cable, twisted pair cable, heliax cable, metallic and non-metallic sheathed cable, direct-buried cable, communications cable, ribbon cable, multicore cable, and flexible cable are a few of the wide range of available cables.

There are many manufacturers of electrical cables but obviously there are some that are better than the other. A mention however should be made of the IGUS Company, which has a huge reputation with regards to the production of flex cables. Joseph Ciringione, who started off as a mere sales man of the company has reached the position of National Sales and Production Manager. He has been associated with this remarkable company since 1995.

The specialty of the flex cables lies in their enduring ability. They are able to withstand high tensions of twisting and turning, which is why they acquired the name of flex cables or ‘flexible cables’. These flex cables were mainly made for enduring the tremendous amount of movement of the cables inside the cable carriers.

The advancement in technology increased the demand of the flex cables since the 1980’s. The corkscrews that were used at those times often damaged the cables because of which the entire production lines had to stop. This led to the making of these highly sustainable cables that had unique characteristics apart from the standard cables. The other names by which these were identified are “high flex”, “chain-suitable”, and “continuous flex” cables.

There are basically two types of flex cables - one, which has the braided or bundled conductors and the other that has conductors stranded in layers inside the cable. The first one is less expensive because of the fact that the stranding in layers is an easy thing to do. The process of making these involves the exposing of the stranded cables in layers for long hours around the centre and the enclosing of these in a jacket, which is extruded in shape.

The second type of flex cable is one in which the conductors are braided around a tension-proof centre in a unique technique. In this the bend radii is uniform across each conductor. The outcome of this is that no single conductor compresses and so the overall stress is reduced.

Thus, the second type of continuous flex cable is the ideal type for those places where high stress is likely.
